Trench

Play by Alexandra Maynard – In Development

Synopsis

It has been eight days since the school shooting.

Bitchface, a disheveled young woman, plays a violent videogame in her crummy basement apartment with, inexplicably, an unconscious boy by her side. A combination of insomnia, alcohol, and post-traumatic stress push her down the rabbit hole of events which led her to this point. Her devolving mental state reveals long-held secrets having left Bitchface feeling rejected and worthless.

Yet in the aftermath of the shooting, Bitchface begins to identify with the shooter in her desperate search for her own sense of power and belonging. As she continues to peel back the layers of violence, bullying, murder and suicide, Bitchface begins to realize that things are not always as they seem. People are not simply defined by their cliques, shooters are not innately evil, and sometimes trauma can bring people closer together.

A dark and poetic piece that explores the making of a school shooter, showing how mental health, bullying, and trauma affect decision making in youth.

*The play is based on firsthand experience of the Dawson College shooting in 2006.
